The McKenzie Method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT) is a system that attempts to classify musculoskeletal pain into either McKenzie syndromes or the group: OTHER.
MDT defines 3 syndromes (each of them has its specific pattern and, logically, its therapy) and the “OTHER” group with evidence-based therapy.
Consequently, an assessment is essential before offering a specific therapy.
The process and result of the assessment will show what we have to do.
In case of finding a very serious pathology, the therapist will most likely suggest that the patient receive specialized medical attention.
In case of suffering from this type of syndrome:
Establish the preferred (correct) direction that reduces, centralizes, or eventually eliminates pain.
We will obtain:
· Rapid improvement (3 to 5 appointments)
· Greater prognosis (ability to anticipate pain and stop its escalation).
Although the McKenzie concept has been known for back treatment for decades, it also applies to every joint in the body without problems.
Lately, there has been a lot of discussion about how much an anatomical diagnosis helps in conservative limb treatment.
The recommendation is to think about syndromes and movements as well.
A McKenzie evaluation can be carried out on people of all ages.
If you are interested in reading more about the McKenzie Method, it is recommended to go to the official website of the McKenzie Institute Spain and Portugal and/or to the official website of The Institute McKenzie International.
